In this side event, policy experts, governments representatives and scientists explored some key issues bridging science and current policy processes, specially on the High Seas “BBNJ” negotiations and in the definitions of new targets and criteria for Area based management tools, including Marine protected areas, in the frame of the UNCDB post-2020 biodiversity agenda.
Haydée Rodríguez-Romero was one of the panelists for the Panel discussion on “How the recent developments on the ocean sciences can better contribute to specific ocean policy processes ?” together with Florian Botto (Principality of Monaco) and Loreley Picourt (Ocean and Climate Platform). Florian Botto of the Principality of Monaco (Signatory to the Sargasso Sea Commission Hamilton Declaration) spoke of the importance of including a central COP with the power to designate MPAs in the BBNJ negotiations. Haydée Rodríguez-Romero, coordinator of the SARGADOM project from the MarViva side, drew the audience’s attention to the dynamic quality of the dome, making it an ideal case study for hybrid governance approaches – “we need to start thinking of the Dome as an island – with its heart in the High Seas, but expanding into other islands off the coast of Mexico, to the Galapagos, even to Chile.” She also issued a Call for Action for a working group centered around the Thermal Dome to be included in the High Ambition Coalition for BBNJ.
