Outcomes BBNJ Preparatory Commission

Main outcomes and agreements, pending issues, and next steps for the implementation of the UN BBNJ Agreement from the first Preparatory Commission held in New York from 24 to 26 June 2024

Main outcomes/agreements

  • The Bureau was elected and began its work with the Co-Chair during the meeting (agenda item 2)
  • Co-chairs elected: Belize and Australia.
  • The calendar for the meetings of the Prep Commission was agreed: 14-25 April, 18-29 August 2025. Dates TBD in 2026.
  • Agreement on the organization of work, to create clusters of the topics to be decided by the COP1 to facilitate work of the Prep Commission.
  • The proposed clusters proposed by the co-chair in consultation with the Bureau reached consensus in almost all clusters. 

Pending issues

  • Appointment of the officials of the credential Committee. To be decided in the first substantive meeting in April 2025.
  • Discuss and agree on the cluster on Financial rules, financial resources and mechanism.

Next steps

  • Next meeting 14-25 April 2025.
  • The General Assembly will need to take the needed actions to convene the first substantial meeting of the Preparatory Commission in April 2025.
  • Development of the provisional programme of work based on the items that have agreement.
